Medieval Manuscripts

The Medieval and Renaissance Manuscript Collection will be unavailable beginning June 15, 2015 due to conservation treatment and reorganization. Manuscripts and fragments in all fonds may not be requested at this time. Access will resume on August 25, 2015 with the start of Fall Semester. All queries may be directed to Dr. David T. Gura.

The previous catalogue was James Corbett, Catalogue of the Medieval & Renaissance Manuscripts of the University of Notre Dame. Notre Dame, 1978. Corbett's catalogue is error filled, out-of-date, and should be used with extreme caution. Digital Scriptorium contains photos and descriptions of some manuscripts from the collection; however, these repeat errors from Corbett and introduce new errors, particularly in identification of texts, transcription, script identification, collation statements, dating, localization, and general descriptive information. The information found on this site should be used cautiously as well. Additionally, the shelfmarks given in both sources are no longer current. For a concordance of the former "Corbett Numbers" and those in perpetual use see below.

A new descriptive catalogue by Dr. David T. Gura, Curator of Ancient and Medieval Manuscripts, is forthcoming from the University of Notre Dame Press. The new catalogue will correct the errors of the previous works, update bibliographical information, and describe the manuscripts newly acquired and discovered. All queries regarding the medieval mansucript collection should be directed to Dr. Gura.
