Selections from the Harry E. Winkler Collection of Boxing Photographs

Introduction

The Harry E. Winkler Photographic Collection includes more than 7,500 different boxing related images in various formats. Winkler was a longtime Los Angeles area fight figure and California correspondent for The Ring magazine from 1939 to 1953. He is best remembered, however, for his extensive collection of boxing photographs, many of which were acquired by the University Libraries of Notre Dame in 1977. Highlights of the collection include close to 4000 4 x 5 inch glass negatives, mostly taken in California in the 1920s and 30s. These are typically posed portraits, of individuals or groups; virtually no fight scenes are included. Among the boxers best represented (by more than 30 plates) are: Sgt. Sammy Baker, Newsboy Brown, Tony Canzoneri, Bert Colima, Speedy Dado, Jack Dempsey, Joe Dundee, Jackie Fields, Ace Hudkins, Les Kennedy, Fidel LaBarba, Jimmy McLarnin, Tod Morgan, Tommy O'Brien, Lee Ramage, Baby Sal Sorio, Bud Taylor, and Mickey Walker. The Winkler Collection also includes close to 1000 4 x 5 inch and 8 x 10 inch film base portrait negatives; most of these date from the 1940s and 50s, while some are second-generation negatives of late nineteenth and early twentieth century prints. There are also over 1500 different 8 x 10 inch portrait photographs to which no negatives in the collection correspond. For the most part, the portraits in the Winkler Collection are of boxers who fought professionally in the United States c 1920-1960, with a very decided emphasis on fighters with a California connection. Also in the collection are over 1000 4 x 5 inch film base negatives (with contact prints) showing fight action; most of the bouts involved were held in the San Francisco Bay area in the late 1940s. The collection also includes a proportionately small number of images of professional wrestlers. A database to Winkler Collection portraits is currently in preparation.

What follows is an index to digital images of a representative selection of Winkler Collection portrait negatives. Action shots (i. e., scenes from actual fights) are not represented in this listing, nor are images of wrestlers. Portraits are listed alphabetically, by subject (or principal subject). Most images range from 175K to 250K in size; the longer of the two sides measures a maximum of 600 pixils. Entries include (left to right):

  • Identification number (e. g., 710-1-14).

  • Format of the image digitized (GNEG = glass negative; PNEG = film base negative; PHPR = photographic print). Unless otherwise specified, all glass and film base negatives are 4 x 5 inches, and all prints are 8 x 10 inches.

  • Name(s) of identifiable subjects.

  • Description of image. The simple designation "portrait" indicates a head and shoulders shot; "half length portrait," three-quarter length portrait," and "full-length portrait" are self explanatory. The designation "as boxer" indicates that the subject was photographed in some manner of boxing or exercise gear. Lack of this designation usually indicates that the subject is in street clothes.

  • Date. Winkler did not typically date his images, either on the envelopes or boxes that originally housed them or on the materials themselves. On those few occasions when dates are present - or when a specific date has been deduced by other means - this information has been noted. No attempts at estimating the dates of particular images have been made - though all the glass negatives (GNEG) shown here may be broadly dated to the years 1922-1940. The relatively few film base negatives in this listing may be broadly dated to the years 1940-1958.
