Roundels

The roundel is a generic name which comprises all charges which are plain circular figures of color or metal. There are different terms for each color in English heraldry as shown below. Roundels of more than one color are refered to as "per pale."

  • a circle with an all-over dot pattern
    or = bezant

  • a white or blank circle
    argent = plate

  • a circle with an all-over vertical lines pattern
    gules = torteau

  • a circle with an all-over horixontal lines pattern
    azure = hurt

  • a circle with an all-over cross-hatch pattern, horizontal and verical lines
    sable = ogress, pellet or gunstone

  • a circle with an all-over diagonal lines pattern, top left to bottom right
    vert = pomme or pomeis

  • a circle with an all-over diagonal lines pattern, top right to bottom left
    purpure = golpe

  • a circle with an all-over cross-hatch pattern, verical and diagonal lines
    tenné = orange

  • a circle with an all-over cross-hatch pattern, diagonal lines
    sanguine = guze

  • a circle with an all-over pattern of horizontal lines, overlaid with blank wavy horizontal bars
    barry wavy argent & azure = fountain
