Bernardo de Torres. Cronica de la provincia Peruana del Orden de los Ermitanos de S. Agustin. Lima: Ivlian Santos de Saldana, 1657.

Bernardo de Torres was born in Spain; he became an Augustinian priest, a doctor in Theology at the University of San Marcos in Lima, a teacher and historian of his order.

The Cronica is a continuation of the work initiated by Antonio de la Calancha in his Cronica moralizada del Orden de Nuestro Padre San Agustín (Barcelona, 1638-1639), the first important "Convent Chronicle" written in Peru.

Andean "convent" historiography seeks to assimilate the American world to traditional universal and eurocentric historical frameworks. Because of their inclusive nature these chronicles provide fundamental information about Spanish colonial society. Torres' Cronica is one of the best imprints to come from the colonial presses of Lima. The Durand Collection has the first edition.
