Bembo, Pietro (Venice 1460 - Rome 1547). Prose di M. Pietro Bembo. Vinegia: Giouan Tacuino, 1525.

Pietro Bembo, philologist, critic, poet and humanist, was made official historiographer of Venice in 1529 and a cardinal in 1539. He moved to Rome and devoted himself to classical history and theology. Bembo wrote one of the first Italian grammars and helped to establish the Italian literary language. He also wrote poetry in Latin and in the vernacular and published Rime (1530), a collected edition of his Italian poems. Gli Asolani (1505), perhaps his most famous work, is a book of dialogues on platonic love, also written in the vernacular.
