Juan de Espinosa Medrano. Apologetico en favor de D. Luis de Gongora. Lima: Iuan de Queuedo y Zarate, 1662.

The most famous work of Juan de Espinosa Medrano is the Apologetico, a response to criticism levelled by the Portuguese writer Manuel de Faría y Sousa against the poet Góngora. It is a book of literary analysis, an evaluation of the originality and genius of Góngora, in the best tradition of "conceptismo" acclaimed by Menéndez y Pelayo. It is considered the most lucid example of "gongorismo" written in the Americas and a classic exponent of the style called "Baroque of the Indies."
