Maps

Special Collections holds printed maps in sheet form in two areas of concentration, Ireland and the Great Lakes region of North America. The David J. Butler Collection of Maps of Ireland consists of approximately 80 maps and 20 photostats of maps held by the Library of Congress printed between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. In addition, there are 11 sea charts printed during the same time period that comprise the Thomas C. and Helen G. McGrath Collection of Sea Charts of Ireland. Online inventories of these maps may be searched by either year or designer.

The Edward and Sheila Scanlan Collection of Maps of the Great Lakes Region includes approximately 200 maps dating from the early 18th to the early 20th century. These maps depict the historical development of the Great Lakes region. Maps may be searched in the library catalog under "Scanlan Collection of Maps" or browsed in a pdf inventory. Please request maps by item number (for example, MAN 1613-01-F1).

Other holdings of cartographic materials include a small accumulation of uncataloged sheet maps mostly of North America and Europe from the 18th to 20th centuries, atlases, and printed volumes containing maps. Atlases and printed volumes may be located in the online library catalog.
