The Hispanic Caribbean Literature Collection

The Hispanic Caribbean Literature Collection includes rare books and manuscripts that offer scholars and students a greater understanding of the region's writers and their published works. These unique materials, along with the works in the circulating collection, acquired through a donation by Notre Dame trustee and alumnus José E. Fernández (ND '65), provide a dynamic collection that meets the needs of under-graduate study and graduate and faculty research.

The collection focuses on the following three groups: twentieth century Puerto Rican writers; twentieth century Dominican writers; and Cuban authors and artists associated with the Orígenes group. Geographically separated, but connected by a single language and related heritage, these internationally recognized writers represent the finest literature of the region.

The following describe the areas in which we are presently building the collection. To view a list of current holdings, click the following link: José E. Fernández Collection (University of Notre Dame Library).

Hispanic Caribbean Manuscripts

The Hispanic Caribbean collection will include manuscripts, letters, typescripts and other ephemera that offer scholars and students research materials for the study of Spanish language literature throughout the entire Caribbean Basin. While the emphasis of the collection will be on Cuba, materials from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic will be collected as well.

The Hispanic Caribbean manuscripts collection forms only one part of Notre Dame's resources for research into the Hispanic literature of the Caribbean Basin. Through an endowment provided by the generosity of José E. Fernández (ND '65), Notre Dame is seeking to dramatically expand its resources in Hispanic Caribbean literature.
