Alfredo J. Torcelli (1864-1936)
Biographical Information
Alfredo J. Torcelli was a writer and early member of the Argentine socialist party in the La Plata province of Buenos Aires.
The Argentine Socialist Party was formed in the the 1890s by intellectuals and skilled foreign workers to improve worker conditions. While anarchists affiliated with the party did use violence on occasion, the party took a moderate approach to promoting its platform, which led to success electing members to the Senate and passing national legislation. Overall, the Socialists remained a minor party whose efforts were hindered by internal conflicts and inability to change with the times.
Torcelli corresponded with many of the scientists and intellectuals who were affiliated with the Socialist Party. He is best known as the editor of the renowned Argentine paleontologist Florentino Ameghino.
